The Puntland House of Representatives has officially voted to strip former Speaker and MP Abdirashiid Yuusuf Jibriil of his parliamentary immunity.
In a session held on Tuesday in the capital Garoowe, 38 members of the Puntland Federal Member State Parliament supported the motion to remove Abdirashiid’s immunity, while one member abstained. The decision follows his recent political move away from Puntland’s legislative body.
Abdirashiid Yuusuf, who once served as the Speaker of the Puntland Parliament, had earlier announced from Laascaanood that he was resigning his parliamentary seat. He cited his intention to dedicate efforts to the formation and development of the SSC-Khaatumo regional administration.
He emphasized his commitment to establishing a federal state for the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn, which have recently seen heightened political and territorial tensions.
The move by the Puntland Parliament is seen as a response to what the leadership views as a breach of political alignment and loyalty to the Puntland Federal Member state structure.
The development comes at a critical time, as political dynamics continue to shift across northern Somalia amid federal and regional realignment efforts.
