President of Egypt Extends Invitation to Somali Counterpart Amid Regional Tensions

In move to strengthen ties and address regional concerns, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt has extended an official invitation to the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The invitation comes at a crucial juncture, following Ethiopia’s controversial memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, which has stirred tensions in the Horn of Africa.

President Mohamud, currently in Eritrea on a two-day visit, received the invitation from President El-Sisi, affirming Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty. The official invitation confirmed by Villa Somalia, emphasizes the importance of fostering diplomatic relations and addressing regional challenges collectively.

State Media reported that a “high-level delegation from the Egyptian government, representing President El-Sisi, visited the State House in Mogadishu to deliver the invitation to President Mohamud.”

The delegation not only extended the invitation but also expressed strong support for Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi aims to engage in discussions with his Somali counterpart on the evolving relationship between the two nations and the broader situation in the Horn of Africa. While the specific timing of President Mohamud’s visit to Cairo remains undisclosed, the invitation signals a commitment to dialogue and collaboration between Egypt and Somalia.

This diplomatic gesture follows President El-Sisi’s recent phone call with President Mohamud, during which he expressed concerns over Ethiopia’s actions in the Somali Sea. The dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the use of Nile River water has been a longstanding issue, further complicating regional dynamics.

As Somalia navigates complex geopolitical challenges, the invitation from Egypt opens avenues for dialogue and cooperation, offering a platform for the leaders to discuss shared interests, regional stability, and diplomatic solutions to pressing issues in the Horn of Africa.
