President Mohamud Reaffirms Commitment to One-Person, One-Vote Elections Amidst Political Criticism

In a resolute speech delivered after Friday prayers at the presidential mosque in Mogadishu, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to implementing a one-person, one-vote election model in Somalia.

President Mohamud’s declaration emphasized the government’s dedication to democratic principles and dispelled rumors of potential delays or compromises. “There is no room for postponement nor compromise,” he asserted, highlighting that this approach is a “principled position” of his administration.

The President’s statement comes amidst growing opposition from prominent political figures, including former Somali presidents, who argue that the one-person, one-vote model might lead to “illegal term extensions” for current leaders. Despite this criticism, President Mohamud called on the public to disregard misinformation and remain focused on the democratic goal.

His address underscores the government’s resolve to ensure that electoral processes remain transparent and fair, aiming to solidify democratic governance in Somalia. The commitment to a direct voting system is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing political stability and legitimacy in the country.
