President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia held a phone conversation with Josep Borrell, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission. The discussion underscored the critical importance of safeguarding Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, according to Villa Somalia .
During the conversation, President Mohamud expressed deep appreciation for the EU’s long-standing support in Somalia’s security sector. He emphasized the crucial role the EU has played in the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and stabilize the region. The President highlighted the importance of the continued Somalia-EU partnership in fostering peace and prosperity, not just within Somalia, but across the Horn of Africa.
Josep Borrell, reaffirming the EU’s commitment, noted that the conversation reinforced the strong relationship between the EU and Somalia. He acknowledged the progress made in Somalia’s security transition and the ongoing efforts to counter terrorism. Borrell reiterated the EU’s support, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to avoid regional tensions, which could undermine these achievements.
“We agreed on the need to avoid regional tensions while fighting terrorism and preserving Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Borrell stated.
