Outrage over Killing of Somali soldier in suspected clan revenge

Strong public outrage and criticism has followed the brutal killing of Ahmed Shire Hussein, a Somali National Army soldier who was reportedly killed in a clan revenge attack near Ceelbaraf days ago.

Ahmed had reportedly taken leave from the frontline and was travelling home when armed militiamen stopped the motorcycle he was riding.

The attackers allegedly forced him off the motorcycle, recorded a video of him and then killed him.

His body was later taken to Buloburde district in Hiiraan region. Relatives said the soldier had suffered severe physical abuse, with his body reportedly bearing signs of extreme violence.

Traditional elder Hussein Jurus condemned the killing and called on the government to take concrete action.

“He was killed in a brutal manner. His eyes were removed, and it was difficult to determine how he could be buried. The government must immediately respond,” he said.

Politician Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame also condemned the killing, saying Ahmed had appealed to his attackers on the basis of Islam, humanity, Somali identity and family ties, but his pleas did not move them.

Several Somali famous people including public figures and members of the public have called for those responsible to be arrested and brought to justice, describing clan revenge killings as a serious crime and inhuman

The killing has renewed concerns over clan violence and the protection of Somali soldiers travelling away from the frontlines, with calls growing for authorities and traditional leaders to take stronger measures against perpetrators.
