NISA’s Social Media restrictions on its Officers spark public debate

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has introduced measures restricting its officers and personnel from appearing on social media, as part of efforts to strengthen security and protect sensitive information.

The agency had previously prohibited its personnel from posting personal photographs and work-related information online.

The latest measures appear aimed at enhancing operational security and concealing officers’ identified and professional responsibilities.

Several NISA officers who were previously active on social media have reportedly been arrested, while videos and photographs frequently shared by security personnel have significantly decreased.

The agency has also accelerated security operations in Mogadishu and made changes to its security personnel.

According to various sources, the developments are believed to be part of a broader strategy to protect officers’ identities and prevent sensitive information from being exposed.

The restrictions have sparked public debate, as many intelligence officers and security personnel were previously visible on social media, where their identities, positions and professional roles could be easily recognised.

NISA however has not publicly explained the reasons behind the reported arrests of its officers or provided details about the measures preventing personnel from appearing on social media.
