Egypt reaffirms support for Somalia’s Sovereignty

Somalia and Egypt have discussed implementing the outcomes of a four-way summit involving the presidents of Somalia, Egypt, Eritrea and Sudan.

Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali Dhaay and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, spoke by phone about developments in the Horn of Africa, particularly Red Sea security.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as efforts to build and strengthen Somali government institutions. He also stressed the importance of continued security and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

Somalia, Egypt, Eritrea and Sudan recently announced new cooperation to safeguard security in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

The call comes as Egyptian troops are expected to arrive in Somalia to take part in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
