NISA eliminates senior Al-Shabaab operative, seizes explosives Materials in Lower Shabelle

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has announced the successful completion of a three-year intelligence operation that culminated in the killing of senior Al-Shabaab operative Geelle Iley in Lower Shabelle region.

According to NISA, the operation involved extensive intelligence gathering, surveillance, and monitoring of the militant commander’s movements before security forces targeted his mobile command post on June 8.

The agency also revealed that its forces recovered more than 100 containers of chemical substances allegedly intended for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The materials were discovered buried in Jilib Marka area of Lower Shabelle after militants reportedly attempted to conceal them from security agencies.

NISA said the operation demonstrates the growing capabilities of Somali intelligence services and forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s operational and logistical networks
