Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) says it has dismantled several Al-Shabaab networks that the militant group was allegedly attempting to secretly establish in Mogadishu and surrounding areas.
In a statement issued on September 15, NISA said its forces arrested 11 operatives linked to the networks during security operations conducted in several locations.
According to the agency, the networks were “being prepared to carry out activities that could threaten security in the capital and neighbouring areas” .
NISA said the operations were carefully “planned and took place in Darussalam, Garasbaley, Kahda, Daynile and Afgoye” .
The agency also said its forces seized weapons and other materials allegedly “intended for use by the operatives in their planned activities” .
NISA described the operations as part of its “continuing efforts to prevent Al-Shabaab and other militant groups from carrying out attacks and activities aimed at undermining security and harming civilians” .
The intelligence agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected security threats or information relating to Al-Shabaab and ISIS to the authorities.
NISA did not provide further details about the identities of those arrested, the specific activities allegedly being planned or the weapons and materials recovered during the operations.
