Kenya: President Ruto Vows Action After Abduction of Five Chiefs in Mandera

President William Ruto has vowed to ensure the safe return of five chiefs abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening security in Kenya’s northern region.

Speaking during his development tour in Mandera County, President Ruto downplayed the militants’ attempts to instill fear, declaring, “Their intention was to scare me, but I am sleeping in Mandera.” He assured residents that the government has significantly weakened Al-Shabaab’s capacity to launch attacks in Northern Kenya.

“We have significantly downgraded the ability of Al-Shabaab to unleash violence on the people of Northern Kenya,” President Ruto stated, emphasizing ongoing security efforts to curb terrorist activities along the Kenya-Somalia border.

The President pledged to deploy additional security personnel and enhance surveillance operations to protect residents and government officials in the region. He reiterated his government’s commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s sovereignty, stating that no criminal elements would be allowed to terrorize citizens with impunity.

Security agencies have intensified operations in Mandera South following the abduction, with specialized units conducting search and rescue missions to locate the missing chiefs. Local leaders and residents have called for swift action, urging the government to reinforce security measures in remote areas vulnerable to militant incursions.

Mandera, which borders Somalia, has been a frequent target of Al-Shabaab attacks, with government administrators, security personnel, and civilians often facing threats from the militant group.
