Somalia’s former Minister of Defence, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, officially handed over the ministry on Wednesday, bringing his brief 24-day tenure to a close following a recent cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
Jibril, who assumed office on April 6, 2025, after serving as Minister of Commerce, was appointed to the Defence Ministry in a surprise move that drew criticism over his lack of military or security experience. His reassignment comes after widespread public concern and internal discussions within the government about the suitability of his appointment.
The Prime Minister’s reshuffle elevated Jibril to the role of Second Deputy Prime Minister, replacing his defence docket with a broader coordination role in government affairs. He has now been succeeded by Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs, who previously led the Ministry of Internal Security and brings more experience in defence and intelligence matters.
The transition ceremony took place at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Mogadishu, where officials from both ministries praised the peaceful transfer of responsibilities. Jibril used the occasion to highlight the importance of unity within government ranks and expressed support for his successor.
Jibril’s time at the helm of the Defence Ministry is among the shortest in Somali history, underscoring the sensitive nature of security portfolios in a country still grappling with insurgency threats and military reforms.
Despite the controversy surrounding his appointment, Jibril remains a prominent political figure in the federal cabinet, and his new role as deputy prime minister is expected to involve significant input in inter-ministerial coordination and political strategy.
