Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Discuss Energy, Defense, and Mediation in Maritime Disputes

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation to discuss the deepening of strategic cooperation between their countries. The leaders addressed various areas of collaboration, including energy, defense, and Somalia’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

During the call, President Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s territorial integrity and national unity. He also emphasized Türkiye’s role in assisting “Somalia’s counter-terrorism initiatives and its positive contribution to the mediation efforts between Somalia and Ethiopia on maritime disputes.”

The discussion underscored the strong bilateral relationship between Somalia and Türkiye, highlighting their shared interests in enhancing security and economic development. The leaders’ dialogue villa Somalia said reflects” a mutual intent to strengthen ties and collaborate on key regional issues.”

This conversation comes amid ongoing efforts to resolve maritime boundary disputes in the Horn of Africa, with Türkiye playing a significant role as a mediator. The second round of talks are scheduled for early September this year.
