The Somali Federal Government has said that the areas on the outskirts of Garbaharay district in Gedo have been taken over from Al Shabaab fighters following security operations in the Gedo region of southern Somalia.
Government officials say they have taken over the Doofaareey , Kooradeer, Booco, Qalwo , Bakara and Fargeel areas, all under Garbaharay district of Gedo.
Garbaharey Police Chief Mohamed Jama Ga’iye said the area in which they carried out the operation had Al-Shabaab leave after they got wind of the operation and the possible imminent confrontation.
He said the purpose of their mission was to “prevent Ramadan attacks by Al-Shabaab and to prevent them collecting Livestock from civilians in the name collecting charity /alms ”
Somali federal troops deployed to Gedo, have made similar operations in the Garbaharey district of Gedo, although Al Shabaab has recaptured after the withdrawal of Somali security forces.
