Fowzia Yusuf Haji Aden Nominated by Somalia for African Union Commission Chairperson

In a strategic move to bolster its presence on the international stage, the Somali government has selected former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fowzia Yusuf Haji Aden, as its candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the term 2025-2028. Fowsiyo, a seasoned politician with a decade-long parliamentary career, aims to become the first Somali to hold this position since Somalia’s official entry into the African Union in 2002.

The announcement underscores Somalia’s commitment to strengthening its role in both international and regional organizations. The government sees Fowzia’s candidacy as a pivotal step in elevating Somalia’s influence and representation on the global stage.

Fowzia Yusuf Haji Aden previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia from November 2012 to January 2014. Her wealth of experience, coupled with her decade-long tenure in the Somali Parliament, positions her as a formidable candidate for the influential role.

Notably, Fowzia made history in 2022 by becoming the first Somali woman to participate in the Somali presidential race, showcasing her dedication to breaking gender barriers in politics.

Since 2002, Somalia has not held the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The past leaders in this role include prominent figures such as Amara Essy (Ivory Coast), Alpha Oumar Konare (Mali), Jean Ping (Gabon), Nkosazana Diamini-Zuma (South Africa), and Musse Faki Mohamed (Chad).

As Fowzia Yusuf Haji Aden steps into the race for the African Union Commission Chairperson, Somalia anticipates a potential milestone in its diplomatic history, with hopes of securing a prominent leadership role within the continental body. The upcoming competition for the 2025-2028 term is set to draw attention to Somalia’s aspirations for increased representation and influence in African affairs.
