Federal Government Begins Plans to Reopen Closed Roads in Mogadishu to Ease Congestion

The Federal Government of Somalia has launched a new plan aimed at reopening several key roads in the capital, Mogadishu, that have long remained closed due to security measures.

The initiative seeks to ease the daily pressure faced by residents of the city, who for years have contended with traffic congestion and restricted access across major roadways.

The Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), was briefed by a multi-agency task force assigned to “assess the traffic crisis in the capital and identify potential solutions.” The committee includes representatives from Somalia’s security agencies, the Benadir Regional Administration, and federal institutions.

During the briefing, the committee outlined the scale of disruption caused by traffic bottlenecks and road closures, and proposed assessments to determine which routes can be safely reopened.

Participants at the meeting reached consensus on the need to reduce the burden of current restrictions on the public, while continuing to maintain security across the city.

Minister Fartaag instructed the task force to begin work immediately and prepare a comprehensive plan in consultation with relevant agencies, including law enforcement, transportation, and district authorities.

Many roads in Mogadishu, known locally as “Jid Cadayaasha” (white roads), remain physically blocked by large concrete barriers—measures that were implemented to protect against car bombings and other attacks during years of heightened insecurity.

Authorities say the new plan will seek a balanced approach, combining improved access for civilians with ongoing security priorities.

The reopening initiative signals a shift in policy as Somalia continues its gradual transition from crisis response to rebuilding normal urban life in the capital.
