EU Delivers Defense Equipment to Somali National Army to Aid in Fight Against al-Shabaab

The European Union Delegation in Somalia has delivered vital defense supplies and equipment to the Somali National Army (SNA) to enhance their capacity in the ongoing campaign against al-Shabaab. The handover ceremony, held in Mogadishu, included the provision of military trucks, life-saving supplies, infrastructure resources, and other essential equipment to support Somali forces in their fight against the insurgent group.

The new equipment, which includes military trucks designed to increase the SNA’s mobility, will enable Somali forces to reach remote areas, transport personnel and supplies, and respond more swiftly to security threats across the country. “This handover, funded by the EU, represents the comprehensive assistance the EU has extended to Somalia over the years,” remarked Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The EU’s support is part of a broader aid initiative aimed at enhancing Somalia’s security capabilities, with a commitment of €110 million under the European Peace Facility (EPF). This funding also bolsters the EU Training Mission (EUTM) in Somalia, which focuses on strengthening the SNA’s ability to manage national security independently. “The EU’s support for our armed forces has been invaluable, and today’s delivery strengthens our capacity further,” commented Somalia’s State Minister of Defence, Omar Ali Omer, who represented the Somali government at the ceremony.

The EU continues to provide critical resources and training support to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), reaffirming its dedication to Somalia’s stability. Supplies delivered under the EPF, including non-lethal aid, play a complementary role to the EUTM’s mission in enhancing Somalia’s defense forces. EU Ambassador to Somalia Karin Johansson and EUTM Force Commander Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari also attended the handover, emphasizing the EU’s commitment to Somalia’s secure and peaceful future.
