Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State Responds to Clashes in Dacawalay

The Somali Regional State in Ethiopia has issued a statement addressing the recent clashes that occurred on Tuesday in Dacawalay, an area between aHarshin and Yoocaale districts.

According to the press release, the Liyuu Police intervened to counter armed groups attempting to disrupt peace and security in the region.

“The Somali Regional State, considering a request from community elders and traditional leaders, offered a peaceful solution to remove the armed groups from the region and restore the rule of law. Unfortunately, these groups ignored the elders’ advice and launched an attack on the security forces stationed near Dacawalay village. The regional security forces successfully repelled the aggression,” the statement read.

The statement also criticized Somaliland’s Ministry of Security for what it described as inappropriate and unfriendly remarks regarding the events in the Somali region.

“It is unfortunate that Somaliland’s Ministry of Security has made comments on matters occurring within the Somali Regional State in a manner that undermines neighborly relations and government protocol,” the statement added.

The response follows an earlier press release from Somaliland accusing the Liyuu Police of committing atrocities and abductions in Dacawalay.

The tensions highlight the strained relations between the Somali Regional State and Somaliland over border and security issues, with both sides trading accusations amidst efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Further developments are expected as both parties continue to monitor the situation closely.
