Egypt to Train Somali Forces to Strengthen National Security

The Egyptian government is set to train Somali forces as part of a broader initiative to enhance national security and stability, according to Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Omar (Ali Balcad).

Minister Balcad stated that military training camps will be established within Somalia, where Somali officers and soldiers will receive high-level training from Egyptian instructors. He emphasized that Egypt has previously trained Somali officers, equipping them with the necessary experience and expertise to contribute to the country’s security.

“The Egyptians have been strong supporters of the Somali National Army (SNA). We hope to establish military training camps in Somalia where Egyptian instructors will train Somali troops. Naturally, those who provide weapons or train officers play a role in the conflicts you engage in,” Minister Balcad remarked.

Egypt is also part of the African Union’s security mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Last year, in 2024, the Egyptian government supplied military equipment to the Federal Government of Somalia to strengthen its armed forces.

The collaboration between Somalia and Egypt highlights growing regional security partnerships, with Cairo playing an increasing role in Somalia’s military capacity-building efforts.
