Djibouti Cabinet Stresses Support for Somalia’s Unity Over Ethiopia-Somaliland Deal Standoff

The Djibouti cabinet convened for its first Council of Ministers session in 2024, addressing pressing regional issues, particularly in light of Ethiopia’s recent agreement with Somaliland over sea access. The council reiterated “its unwavering commitment to Somalia’s Unity, Territorial Integrity, and Sovereignty.”

The primary agenda of the Council of Ministers’ meeting included a comprehensive review of the major challenges facing the region. Djibouti’s government, led by Minister of Economy and Finance Ilyas M Dawaleh, emphasized the importance of addressing these issues through “a harmonious path of regional economic integration and collective well-being.”

In response to Ethiopia’s move to sign a sea access deal with Somaliland, a move that has sparked tensions in the Horn of Africa, the Djibouti cabinet underscored its “unwavering principle of supporting Somalia’s Unity, Territorial Integrity, and Sovereignty.”

This reaffirmation comes at a crucial time when diplomatic relations in the region are experiencing strain due to geopolitical developments.

Amidst the fragility of the current geopolitical landscape, the Djibouti cabinet emphasized the need for wisdom and dialogue to navigate challenges.

Government spokesperson and Minister of Information, Youssouf Mahmoud Ali, is expected to release the official communique of Djibouti’s Council of Ministers, detailing the outcomes of the meeting and the government’s stance on regional matters.
