Members of the international community have expressed concern over the current political situation in Somalia, calling on Somali leaders to urgently resume dialogue and reach consensus on an election roadmap in the interest of the Somali people.
In a joint statement issued on June 1, a coalition of diplomatic missions and international partners warned against actions that could further escalate political tensions and undermine national stability.
“The signatories of this joint statement are concerned by the current situation in Somalia,” the statement said. The international partners urged all sides to return to negotiations “as soon as possible” and swiftly agree on a roadmap for elections.
The statement emphasized that the international community remains ready to support Somali-led discussions if requested, stressing that any solution to the country’s political challenges must be driven by Somali stakeholders themselves.
At what the statement described as a “delicate moment,” Somali leaders were urged to place national interests above political differences and avoid steps that could deepen divisions.
The joint appeal comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding Somalia’s political process and electoral arrangements, issues that have increasingly dominated national debate in recent months.
Signatories to the statement include the embassies of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union Delegation to Somalia and the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).
The coordinated intervention by Somalia’s international partners underscores mounting concern over the political impasse and reflects a broader desire to see Somali leaders reach an agreement through dialogue and consensus-building.
