Consultative Conference on women quota in Parliament begin in Mogadishu.

The Minister of Women and human rights  in the federal government of Somalia Ms. Hanifa Mohamed Ibrahim yesterday inaugurated a consultative meeting in Mogadishu on the quota for women in the House of the People.

The two-day conference was attended by members of both houses of parliament, representatives from the United Nations, women’s rights organizations, officials from the ministry and other dignitaries.

Some of the regional leaders who spoke at the forum said that they have made great efforts to secure women’s seats in the Upper House, and that now focus shifts on the women’s quota in the ongoing elections of House of the People.

Somalia’s Minister of Women’s Affairs, Ms. Hanifa, noted that she had held various meetings with the federal and State electoral Commissions, which she said had agreed to confirm the quota for women in Parliament, and that the Ministry would not relent until such a time that the quota is achieved.

In the agreement on the election, the quota for women is supposed to be 30% representation.
