Heavy clashes have on Wednesday morning erupted in Baardheere, a strategic town in Somalia’s Gedo region, between forces of the Somali Federal Government and Jubbaland State. The intense fighting, which began early Wednesday morning, has resulted in multiple casualties, including the death of Mohamed Ilyas Agaane, the recently appointed federal administrator of Baardheere.
According to local sources, both sides have sustained injuries, with some wounded soldiers being transferred to medical facilities for urgent treatment. The fighting has been concentrated around key government installations, particularly the police station and district headquarters.
Tensions Escalate into Open Conflict
The clashes follow a period of heightened tensions, as both factions sought to assert control over Baardheere. On Tuesday, Jubbaland forces reportedly seized control of the town in a move seen as a significant challenge to Mogadishu’s authority. The Federal Government launched a counterattack the following day, escalating the conflict further.
Witnesses describe the situation as deteriorating, with heavy gunfire and artillery exchanges continuing throughout the day. Reports indicate that Federal Government troops attempted to reclaim the town’s administrative offices, leading to an intense battle in the city center.
The ongoing power struggle between the Federal Government and the Jubbaland administration has long fueled instability in Gedo. The region has been a focal point of disputes over governance and military control, with Jubbaland forces loyal to President Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” resisting efforts by Mogadishu to establish dominance.
Somali lawmaker Mursal M. Khalif criticized the Federal Government’s offensive, warning that the violence only strengthens Al-Shabaab by creating instability and diverting resources from counterterrorism efforts.
“This conflict benefits no one but Al-Shabaab,” Khalif stated on social media, calling for immediate de-escalation.
Baardheere’s seizure by Jubbaland forces marks another setback for Somalia’s central government, following similar developments in Raskamboni last year. The ongoing struggle for control over Gedo has widened the rift between Mogadishu and regional administrations, complicating efforts to strengthen national unity and governance.
Many residents have fled the conflict zones, while others remain trapped in their homes.
With neither side showing signs of backing down, the situation in Baardheere remains volatile.
