China to deploy new Naval task Force to Somali waters and Gulf of Aden

China is preparing to deploy a new naval task force to waters off Somalia and the Gulf of Aden as part of its continuing maritime security operations in the region, according to the Chinese government.

The deployment will include three warships – the Kunming, a guided-missile destroyer; the Yueyang, a frigate equipped with modern weapons systems; and the Lomahu, a supply vessel carrying personnel, equipment and logistical supplies for the naval mission.

China’s Ministry of National Defense said the vessels will form the 49th Chinese naval escort task force, taking over responsibilities from the 48th task force, which began its mission in October 2025.

The new task force is expected to arrive in Somali waters and the Gulf of Aden in mid-August. Its mission will include supporting maritime security and protecting commercial shipping operating through one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.

China has maintained a naval presence off Somalia since 2008, when it began participating in international efforts to protect vessels from piracy. Beijing says its naval escort missions have helped more than 7,000 commercial and other vessels safely navigate waters affected by piracy.

The deployment comes as Somalia and international partners continue to strengthen cooperation on maritime security, particularly along the Somali coast, the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Chinese authorities have highlighted the results of their long-running escort missions, saying the operations have contributed to the safe passage of commercial and passenger vessels through the region.

The latest deployment is expected to maintain China’s naval presence in the waters surrounding Somalia while supporting efforts to safeguard international shipping and maritime trade.
