Markets in Mogadishu today reported a shortage of camel meat, a staple that many Somali families rely on for everyday meals.
According to camel meat traders, the Somali government has imposed additional taxes on camels during the period they are brought to the markets in Mogadishu.
Traders said the government is charging taxes of around $7 and that other fees are also being collected at different points along the supply process.
As a result, the price of camel meat has increased in the city. Traders noted that while a kilogram was previously sold for about $6, it is now rising to around $8.
With supply slowing and retail prices rising, traders in Mogadishu are urging the government to review its taxation framework and ease the heavy burden on market participants.
The traders warn that continued cost increases could further limit the availability of camel meat in the city’s markets.
