Bashaqle emerging as strategic Military zone near Türkiye’s Space facility

Bashaqle, an area located between Cadale and Warsheekh in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, is reportedly emerging as a strategic military zone as security infrastructure is developed around Türkiye’s planned space facility.

Construction of the Turkish space facility near Warsheekh is already underway. Satellite imagery reviewed by Le Monde showed construction activity beginning in October 2025, with an initial phase of the project expected to be completed by the summer of 2027.

According to security and local sources, military infrastructure is being established around Bashaqle to provide protection for the strategic facility and surrounding areas. The emerging security arrangement is expected to include facilities supporting ground forces, an airfield for air operations and naval infrastructure along the nearby Indian Ocean coast.

The area has previously been associated with a growing Turkish military presence. Reports in February said Turkish troops had established positions around El-Bashaqle and Qorilow, on the outskirts of Warsheekh, as part of efforts to support Somali forces in operations against Al-Shabaab.

The planned deployment of Turkish-trained Gorgor special forces would further strengthen the military presence in the area. The Gorgor units are among Somalia’s elite forces and have received extensive training and support from Türkiye. The 21st Gorgor Battalion, for example, recently returned from military training in Türkiye and has been prepared for deployment to strategic areas as part of wider Somali security operations.

The development comes as Middle Shabelle remains an important security theatre. The European Union Agency for Asylum reported that Al-Shabaab continues to maintain a presence in parts of the region, while government-aligned forces control several key towns, including Cadale and its surrounding areas.

Türkiye’s space project is therefore being developed in an area where security considerations are closely linked to the broader Somali counter-insurgency campaign. Le Monde reported that Turkish military advisers and special forces had expanded their presence beyond Mogadishu into Middle Shabelle, with the security deployment intended in part to protect the aerospace facility.

If the reported military infrastructure at Bashaqle is fully developed, the area could become an important component of the security architecture surrounding the Turkish space facility, giving Somalia and Türkiye a strengthened military footprint along the central Somali coast.
