Mogadishu – In a continuation of its commitment to the gradual transition of security responsibilities to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is gearing up for Phase Three drawdown. This pivotal phase, scheduled for June, aims to strategically reduce troop numbers by an additional 4000 soldiers, further aligning with the overarching plan to empower and strengthen Somalia’s own security apparatus.. As the successful completion of Phase Two drawdown marks a significant milestone, ATMIS, with logistical support from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), is now focusing on the next phase of troop reduction. Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, the Force Commander for ATMIS, emphasized the collective efforts of the Drawdown Tripartite Committee – ATMIS, FGS, and UNSOS – in successfully completing both Phase One and Two, setting the stage for the upcoming Phase Three.
The drawdown process involves a meticulous assessment of troop distribution, strategic consolidation of military assets, and a continued transfer of control to the Federal Government of Somalia. The decision to further reduce troop numbers by 4000 in June signifies a calculated approach, balancing the need for continued support with the ultimate goal of self-sustained safety and security within Somalia.
Key locations, Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), are expected to undergo evaluation for potential transfer or closure during Phase Three. This phase’s success hinges on maintaining a united and cohesive approach, “ensuring a smooth transition that empowers Somali security forces while continuing to combat threats such as Al-Shabaab.”
The drawdown ceremony in June will not only mark a numerical reduction in troops but will symbolize a continued commitment to Somalia’s sovereign future. Plans include reinforcing the capabilities of Somali security forces, providing technical training, and ensuring the sustainable operation and maintenance of equipment transferred to the FGS.
