All Set For Somalia To Become Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council

Somalia is set to be elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with a vote by the UN General Assembly today. A delegation from Somalia, led by Foreign Minster Ahmed Moallim Fiqi are present in New York for the pivotal vote.

Starting in January 2025, Somalia will hold the seat for a two-year term, joining Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama. These nations will take over from the outgoing members: Mozambique, Switzerland, Malta, Japan, and Ecuador. Notably, this will mark Somalia’s return to the UNSC, having previously served in the early 1970s.

Somalia’s election to the UNSC underscores its growing role and influence in international affairs. As a member, Somalia will participate in key decisions related to global peace and security, contributing its unique perspective and experiences to the Council’s deliberations.

The Somali delegation expressed optimism about the nation’s upcoming term, highlighting the opportunity to advocate for issues pertinent to Somalia and the broader African region. The delegation emphasized their commitment to addressing global challenges, including conflict resolution, counter-terrorism, and sustainable development.

Joining Somalia on the Council, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama have all previously served on the UNSC, bringing valuable experience to the table.

As Somalia prepares to take on this significant responsibility, the nation looks forward to collaborating closely with fellow Council members and the international community to promote peace, security, and stability worldwide.

The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the UN, tasked with ensuring international peace and security. It has 15 members, five of which are permanent (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. The Council is responsible for determining the existence of threats to peace or acts of aggression and for taking appropriate action to maintain or restore international peace and security.
