African Union Approves $10 Million Emergency Support for AUSSOM Mission in Somalia

The African Union’s Executive Council has approved an additional $10 million in emergency funding to support the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), according to a resolution passed during its 47th session held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The funds will be drawn from the African Union’s Emergency Contingency Reserve Fund and are intended to “strengthen the new peace support operation” tasked with promoting peace, stability, and security across Somalia.

AUSSOM was launched earlier in 2025 to succeed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which had operated in the country for several years. The new mission is expected to build on ATMIS’s legacy while adapting to evolving security and governance challenges in the region.

The African Union noted that the financial support is crucial for enabling AUSSOM to meet its “operational requirements” , particularly amid current fiscal challenges that risk hampering security and stabilization efforts in Somalia.

AU officials further emphasized the urgency of mobilizing both political and financial backing from international partners to ensure that AUSSOM has the necessary resources to fulfill its mandate effectively.

As Somalia continues to battle against Al-Shabaab insurgents and rebuild state institutions, AUSSOM plays a central role in supporting Somali-led efforts to achieve long-term peace and development.
