The UK government has announced that it will increase overseas aid, with the funding to be delivered by the London administration reaching 3% of the government’s budget, as referenced in the statement, while the national budget figure was described as 7%.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the assistance will be carefully monitored, and that additional support will be added to strengthen the government’s new approach under the UK’s foreign policy reform plan.
The move appears to reopen doors to expanded foreign assistance that had previously been restricted. It comes as a development that draws attention to how the policy direction may shift under the current leadership, following changes associated with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who left office in early July 2024.
