The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced the postponement of elections previously planned for August 20 in Hirshabelle State.
In a statement, the commission said the delay was necessary to allow the completion of outstanding electoral preparations.
The commission noted that voter registration is still underway in four districts of Hirran Region, contributing to the decision to postpone the elections.
It also said political organizations need additional time to mobilize their supporters and facilitate the submission of candidate lists for the seats being contested.
The postponement comes as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud continues to pledge that Somalia will move toward direct elections, allowing citizens to choose their representatives through the ballot.
The commission is expected to announce the new Hirshabelle election schedule within the next two weeks.
