Intense fighting continues on the outskirts of Ethiopia’s capital as the federal government confronts advancing forces from the FANO militia. The conflict, which has grown increasingly volatile, erupted near Addis Ababa after the government deployed additional troops to secure the city and its surrounding areas.
The FANO militia has been pressing towards the capital over the past days, launching counter-attacks against government reinforcements. In an effort to strengthen the city’s defenses, the Ethiopian government has reportedly increased the presence of federal forces in Addis Ababa, which is also the headquarters for the African Union. The unrest has disrupted movement across multiple regions within Ethiopia.
This ongoing civil conflict has deepened since 2020 when disagreements over regional elections in Tigray sparked hostilities between regional and federal forces, spreading violence throughout northern Ethiopia.
