The British government called on all stakeholders in the Federal government of Somalia and the federal member states to continue constructive dialogue in accordance with the September 17 agreement and the recommendations of the technical committee in Baidoa.
Barbara Woodward, the UK’s Permanent representative to the UN, speaking to members of the UN Security Council yesterday, encouraged all parties despite the challenges, to continue advancing the security transition plan and operations beginning in 2022.
“Ensure that the election is inclusive, reliable and can be as soon as possible, and is the way out to political unrest that is fueling insecurity and instability in Somalia,” she said.
“The clashes on April 25th alone have displaced tens of thousands of Somalis and we are deeply concerned about the risk of further violence, especially if the talks fail. Respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians are key to the legitimacy of Somalia’s government”, Woodward added.
The diplomat further said, “Political violence will only increase the risk of COVID-19, floods situation , droughts, food shortages, and locusts all posing a serious threat to Somalia’s long-term stability. Somali leaders must continue to work to address these implications. ”
The ambassadors expressed her government’s commitment to continue supporting Somalia with a view to minimizing the long-term impact of the so-called terrorism, political crisis.
