The fragile peace in the Sool region of Somalia faces renewed threats as tensions between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo forces escalate, raising fears of a potential new conflict.
A senior officer from the SSC-Khatumo forces, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that recent movements by forces supporting SSC-Khatumo indicate readiness to defend their territory. The officer highlighted the support received during previous confrontations with Somaliland forces, emphasizing their capability to repel attacks and protect their land.
The officer warned of dire consequences if aggression from clans supporting the Somaliland administration were to trigger hostilities. Such a scenario, he cautioned, would escalate into a broader conflict, transcending communal boundaries and risking stability in the region.
Expressing concern over the escalating situation, the officer underscored that a new conflict would only lead to bloodshed and further instability, urging for restraint and dialogue to resolve differences peacefully.
Meanwhile, Somaliland has reportedly bolstered its military presence in the Oog district, situated between Burco and Lasaanood, with the deployment of additional troops and military equipment. This surge in activity coincides with preparations for the upcoming May 18 celebrations, raising concerns that Somaliland may be positioning itself for renewed hostilities in the Sool region.
Local residents have reported increased troop deployments in strategic areas, including Buqdharkeyn and Oog, heightening anxieties about the potential outbreak of violence.
The international community has been urged to intervene and facilitate dialogue between the conflicting parties to prevent further escalation and preserve the fragile peace in the region.
