European Union Allocates $116.9 Million to Strengthen Security Transition in Somalia

The European Union (EU) has announced a substantial financial commitment of $116.9 million aimed at enhancing security transition efforts in Somalia. This funding includes $74.4 million designated for the transfer of security responsibilities from the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces, slated to depart Somalia by the end of 2024.

In addition to this, the EU has pledged $42.5 million to support Somali forces in assuming full security responsibility for their country. This strategic investment is pivotal in empowering Somalia to independently manage and address security challenges within its borders.

The withdrawal process of ATMIS troops began in 2023 in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2023. ATMIS has already completed the initial and secondary phases of troop reduction, totaling 5,000 troops, and has handed over control of 13 bases to Somalia’s security forces. However, an additional 4,000 ATMIS soldiers are expected to be withdrawn from Somalia by the end of June, marking a significant milestone in Somalia’s security transition.

The EU’s financial support underscores its status as the largest contributor to the ATMIS mission, having provided approximately $2.87 billion since 2007. This substantial investment reflects the EU’s enduring commitment to fostering peace, stability, and security in Somalia and the broader region.

The EU’s allocation of funds for security transition in Somalia comes at a critical juncture, signaling a concerted effort to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to address security challenges independently. This initiative aligns with broader objectives of promoting peace and stability in Somalia, ultimately contributing to a more secure and resilient future for the country and its citizens.
