Trump faces backlash over social media post featuring Somali girls in hijab

Donald Trump has faced widespread criticism from officials and Muslim rights organizations after sharing a social media video showing Somali children wearing hijabs during a kindergarten graduation ceremony at a school in Minnesota.

The clip, which reportedly lasts about 14 seconds, depicts students at Gateway STEM Academy in St. Paul. It shows multiple Somali girls dressed in graduation attire and headscarves.

Trump posted the video on his Truth Social account after reposting a message from the “End Wokeness” page, which claimed that all the girls in the video were wearing hijabs. The former president did not add any further commentary.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the dissemination of the video could fuel anti-Muslim hate and put the children featured in the clip at risk.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also condemned the move, saying it is unacceptable for the U.S. president to target very young children based on what they wear.

The Somali American Partnership additionally stated that the Somali community is an important part of Minnesota and that Somali children deserve recognition for their education and future not to be used in political arguments or statements that incite hostility toward Muslims and immigrants.
