The Ministry of Internal Security of Somalia’s SouthWest State has on Sunday concluded a five-day Community and Police Engagement Training session in Hudur, a town located in the Bakool region. The initiative, which began on Sunday, was supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Somalia and aimed to enhance cooperation between local communities and law enforcement.
The training sought to “foster trust and improve communication between the police and citizens” , a key factor in strengthening security efforts in the region. Minister of Internal Security for SouthWest State, Hassan Abdikadir, underscored the significance of the training. “This training is an important step in building trust and improving communication between law enforcement and citizens, contributing to peace and stability in the region,” the Minister said.
Participants in the session included local police officers and representatives from various community groups, who worked together to address security challenges in Hudur and its surrounding areas. The focus was on creating stronger partnerships to improve public safety, combat crime, and maintain order in the face of ongoing threats from militant groups and other security issues.
The SouthWest State government, in partnership with international organizations like UNDP, has prioritized initiatives that promote community-based approaches to security. The training in Hudur is part of a broader effort to empower local communities to play a more active role in ensuring their own safety while enhancing the capacity of law enforcement agencies to respond effectively to threats.
With tensions still present in parts of the Bakool region, such initiatives are seen as critical to stabilizing the area and reducing the influence of armed groups
