Somaliland’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has reported the arrest of suspected Al-Shabaab militants in the city of Burco. According to officials, these individuals were allegedly involved in plotting to target the region’s security services and disrupt the upcoming elections in the self-declared republic.
The intelligence agency highlighted that this operation reflects ongoing efforts to safeguard Somaliland’s stability and democratic process. Officials emphasized the importance of heightened security measures as Somaliland prepares for elections, aiming to prevent any attempts by militant groups to interfere with the process.
The arrests follow recent actions by Somaliland security forces to curb terrorist activities within its borders. NIA said it demonstrates the administration’s commitment to addressing threats that could destabilize the region and its democratic institutions.
The NIA stated that further investigations are underway to assess the extent of the group’s operations and any possible links to other extremist cells in the region.
