Politicians in the northern regions of Somaliland, particularly the of Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi, have said they are not part of the Mogadishu consultative conference that yielded today’s signing of the agreement.
In a statement, the politicians said they were not part of the conference’s decisions and would share details with the Somali public and the media.
The two northern political factions, led by Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled and Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi, have failed to reach an agreement on the Northern Electoral Commission .
“We want to make it clear to the Somali people, political stakeholders and the international community that we have not yet been involved, have any advice or information on the approach to the election of members of Somaliland and therefore make it clear that we are not part of it. And are not bound by the decisions of the conference if the conference ends in this way.
We will share with the Somali people and the media more details and information on the issue of the 57-seat parliamentary elections in Somaliland and we will take decisive decisions. ”
The statement from a group of northern politicians comes as the Somali election consultative conference, which has been going on for five days at the Air Force base in Afgoye, is set to close today.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway by the Prime Minister of the federal government of Somalia and some state presidents to resolve the dispute between northern politicians, which may be resolved in the coming hours.
