Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nor, has held a consultative meeting with civil society representatives to discuss national affairs, parliamentary responsibilities and ways to strengthen public participation in governance.
The meeting provided an opportunity for civil society representatives to share their views on the state of the nation, the work of the House of the People, public services, national unity and national defence.
According to the State Media, discussions also focused “on strengthening cooperation between Parliament and civil society organisations to ensure that citizens’ concerns and perspectives inform legislation and parliamentary oversight” .
A key part of the discussions was Gole Kaab, a programme designed to connect citizens with the House of the People by providing channels through which members of the public can raise concerns, submit recommendations and contribute ideas to parliamentary work.
The initiative seeks to strengthen communication between elected representatives and the public while encouraging greater citizen involvement in legislative and oversight processes.
The meeting reflects efforts to expand engagement between Parliament and civil society organisations on issues affecting the country and its people.
Stronger cooperation between the two sides is expected to help improve public participation in governance and ensure that citizens’ views are considered in parliamentary decision-making.
