The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the election timetable for both houses of the Federal Parliament and the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, announced by the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
In a statement, the government described the timetable as an important step towards implementing the electoral process and strengthening democracy in the country.
The government also said it had spent the past 18 months pursuing consultations and negotiations with various Somali stakeholders to build consensus on the country’s electoral process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to continuing these efforts to achieve a broad-based agreement among Somali stakeholders as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
The timetable follows months of political disagreements between the federal government and opposition groups over the electoral model, with disputes centring on the election process, constitutional changes and the need for consensus among Somalia’s political stakeholders.
