Somalia reaffirms position on Cyprus, denies any change in foreign policy

The Federal Republic of Somalia has reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Cyprus issue, stressing that its policy remains guided by international law, the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

In a statement issued in Mogadishu on August 20, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said recent public references had prompted the government to clarify its position.

“Somalia reaffirms its full respect for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus,” the ministry said, citing UN Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984).

The ministry said a personal communication posted publicly does not represent a change in Somalia’s official foreign policy.

“The referenced personal communication post does not reflect, and shall not be interpreted as, any change in the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the statement said.

Somalia also made clear that it has not recognized a separate entity in the northern part of Cyprus and that no decision has been taken to alter its established position.

“It does not constitute recognition of any separate entity in the northern part of Cyprus, and no decision has been taken by the Federal Government to alter its established position,” the ministry added.

The Somali government further reiterated its support for a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the Cyprus dispute under UN auspices.

“Somalia remains committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter and to the peaceful resolution of disputes,” the statement said.

The clarification comes amid renewed public discussion over Somalia’s position on Cyprus, with the government emphasizing that its official policy remains unchanged.
