Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre travelled on Monday to Ballanbale town in Galgaduud region, Galmudug State, as efforts continue to resolve a clan conflict that previously led to armed clashes in the area.
Federal Government officials have in recent weeks stepped up efforts to mediate between the communities whose militias were involved in the fighting. According to reports, the reconciliation efforts have made progress towards reaching an agreement between the two sides.
Prime Minister Hamza is expected to attend the closing ceremony of the reconciliation process, where representatives of the two sides are expected to sign an agreement containing measures aimed at strengthening the settlement and preventing further clashes between armed militias.
Galgaduud has previously experienced armed confrontations and revenge killings, particularly affecting pastoralist communities. The reconciliation efforts have focused on easing tensions, reopening access between communities and reducing fear among residents.
Sources close to the Prime Minister’s trip also told Mustaqbal that Hamza is expected to visit some Federal Government military camps in the region, where he will receive briefings from commanders and meet troops stationed there.
Further details on the Prime Minister’s visit and the outcome of the reconciliation ceremony are expected to emerge later.
