Somalia joins global maritime satellite monitoring body IMSO to strengthen sea security.

Somalia has officially joined the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), a global body that oversees satellite-based monitoring systems used to track ships and maritime movements across international waters. The move marks a significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance maritime safety, security, and oversight over its vast coastline.

The announcement came after Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac), accompanied by Mogadishu Port Director Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameriko), held a key meeting with senior officials from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), including Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez.

According to sources, Somalia was presented with the requirements needed for accession and subsequently fulfilled and accepted them, paving the way for formal membership in the IMSO framework.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Minister Abdulqadir confirmed that Somalia had completed the formal procedures and handed over the documents confirming the country’s accession to the international agreement.

“It is an honor to have met IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, during which I officially handed over the documents confirming Somalia’s accession to the IMSO Convention. Somalia’s membership strengthens the Federal Government’s efforts toward maritime security and international cooperation,” the minister said.

He added that discussions with IMO officials focused on key maritime priorities for Somalia and how the new partnership would support the country’s push to modernize institutions working in the maritime sector, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and improve safety across its waters.

“We emphasized our commitment to modernizing maritime institutions, reinforcing the laws governing our seas, and safeguarding our extensive coastline,” Minister Abdulqadir noted.

He concluded by expressing confidence that the collaboration with IMO and the support Somalia will receive through IMSO membership will contribute to sustainable maritime security and promote the development of the country’s blue economy.

Somalia’s accession aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen security across its maritime, airspace, and land borders, and complements ongoing international agreements aimed at supporting those efforts.
