Somalia implements digital signature system for efficient payroll processing

The National Accountant General of Somalia Abdirahman Mohamed Anas has announced that Somalia has fully adopted a modernized financial system that facilitates timely salary payments, even when directors are away on official travel. This innovative approach aims to streamline the payment process, significantly reducing delays.

Abdirahman praised the Central Bank of Somalia for its support in this initiative, emphasizing that the new system allows salaries to be disbursed within a single day, a stark contrast to other countries where such processes may take up to a week.

“Somalia has fully embraced the modernization of its financial system, which not only involves the digital signature but also offers broader benefits.”He said

“Somalia has fully embraced the modernization of its national financial system, which is not just about the digital signature, but encompasses broader benefits. Government payments previously went through up to 24 steps, with some transactions taking as long as two months. The shortest time we were praised for was 15 days, but we have now reduced that to around 10 days or even less. We are now able to make payments within 24 hours.” Said Anas

“Directors were said to be away on travel and would sign from their locations. We have worked hard to facilitate government services for both citizens and expatriates in the country. Our main message today is to inform the world that Somalia has made significant progress,” he added.

He also highlighted the challenges faced by directors who previously had to sign documents from their locations while traveling. The government has worked hard to facilitate services for both citizens and expatriates in the country.

On August 16, 2025, the Minister of Finance, Bihi Iman Egeh, launched the digital signature initiative, describing it as a commitment from the government to build a modern, transparent financial system grounded in accountability and full trust.
