Somalia extends condolences to Central African Republic after Zamboye Gold Mine disaster

The Federal Government of Somalia has extended its condolences to the Central African Republic following the collapse of an artisanal gold mine in Zamboye village in the western part of the country, a disaster that reportedly killed more than 100 people and left others missing.

In a statement issued on August 20, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it had learned of the incident “with profound sorrow,” expressing solidarity with the Central African Republic and the families affected by the tragedy.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Somalia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation extends its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Central African Republic and to the bereaved families,” the ministry said.

The ministry also expressed sympathy for those injured and those involved in the ongoing relief operation.

“As fellow members of the African Union, Somalia stands in solidarity with the Central African Republic at this painful time and conveys its sympathy to the injured and to those leading the ongoing relief effort,” the statement said.

The Somali government also offered its thoughts and prayers to those affected by the disaster as rescue and relief efforts continue.

The Zamboye mine collapse has highlighted the dangers faced by communities involved in artisanal mining, while authorities continue efforts to respond to the disaster and establish the fate of those still missing.
