Somalia’s Cabinet met today at the Office of the Prime Minister to review reports on the country’s overall situation, with a focus on security and diplomatic affairs.
The Cabinet welcomed the recent one-person, one-vote elections held in the Galmudug and Hirshabelle states, describing them as an important step in Somalia’s electoral process.
The Cabinet also approved a resolution on preparations to prevent and respond to Ebola. A committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister II Jibril Haji Abdi was appointed, comprising representatives from the Ministries of Health, Internal Security, Foreign Affairs, Transport, Information, and Livestock.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry briefed the Cabinet on Somalia’s ongoing efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), saying the process, which has been underway for about 10 years, is nearing completion.
The ministry said Somalia has fulfilled all the required conditions, including setting tariffs for imported goods and establishing the necessary administrative institutions.
The Cabinet also approved a nine-member board for the National Fisheries Company, following a proposal by the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy.
The Cabinet further reiterated that the Somali government has promised relentless efforts against Al-Shabaab, affirming that security forces will continue their intensified operations alongside broader measures to protect civilians and secure long-term stability across the country.
