Somalia bans UAE military and Cargo Aircraft from Its Airspace

Somalia has banned all military and cargo aircraft owned or chartered by the United Arab Emirates from entering its airspace, following allegations that a UAE-linked aircraft transported a “fugitive” Yemeni rebel leader without the knowledge or authorization of Somali authorities, security sources said.

According to the sources, the decision was taken after Somali officials “determined that Somali airspace may have been used without clearance to facilitate the movement of a Yemeni political figure wanted by authorities” . The move reflects growing concern within the federal government over violations of its sovereignty and control of national airspace.

Security officials said that one of six UAE military and cargo aircraft that have recently been landing at Somali airports has already breached the new directive twice, on Friday and Saturday, despite the ban. The federal government has reportedly warned that additional measures will be taken should further violations occur.

The ban applies strictly to military and cargo flights and does not affect civilian commercial airlines, including FlyDubai, according to the same sources.

Earlier this week, Somalia confirmed it was investigating the unauthorized use of its airspace, allegedly by the UAE, in connection with the escape of the Yemeni figure, whom officials described as a fugitive. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and may lead to further diplomatic or legal action.

The development marks a significant escalation in tensions between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi, with Somali officials emphasizing that any foreign military or logistical activity within Somali airspace must be conducted with full transparency and prior approval from the federal government.
