Somalia and Türkiye have discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in the fisheries sector, combat illegal fishing and expand Somalia’s blue economy.
Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Adan, held talks on Thursday with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Somalia, Ferhat Alkan, focusing on opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation in the sector.
During the meeting, the minister thanked the Turkish government for its support in developing Somalia’s fisheries industry.
Ambassador Alkan said Türkiye would “provide training for Somali fishermen to help improve their skills and increase production”
The discussions come as Somalia seeks to develop its extensive marine resources, strengthen fisheries management and create economic opportunities for coastal communities.
Türkiye is among Somalia’s international partners supporting development in several sectors. The two countries also have an agreement on cooperation in coastal protection, according to Mustaqbal Media.
The planned training is expected to contribute to improving the capacity of Somali fishermen and supporting the sustainable development of the country’s fisheries sector.
