Members of Galmudug’s 89-seat House of Representatives are scheduled to elect the regional state’s president and deputy president on Thursday, in a vote that will determine the leadership succeeding outgoing President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor.
Two candidates are competing for the presidency: Abdulkadir Abdullahi Dirir, representing the Sincad Party, and Liban Ahmed Hassan, representing the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP).
The House of Representatives will also elect the deputy president as part of Thursday’s electoral process.
Security has been tightened in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug, ahead of the vote, as authorities prepare for the election of a new regional leadership.
The election marks a significant political development for Galmudug, with the newly elected leadership expected to oversee the administration’s affairs and address the region’s political and development priorities.
Further details, including the election results, are expected as voting proceeds.
