Somali Regional State Warns of ‘AS’ Plot to Destabilize Regional Security

The Security Office of the Somali Regional State has issued a statement warning of a new plan allegedly devised by Al-Shabaab (AS) fighters to undermine the region’s stability.

The strategy reportedly involves sowing discord among local clans to create a cover for their activities according to reports.

In its advisory, the Somali Regional State Security Office urged residents to avoid any actions that could aid the group or align with the markers security agencies are monitoring.

The statement emphasized that AS, after failing to penetrate the region through direct combat, has shifted its tactics. The group is now allegedly attempting to infiltrate communities under the guise of clan affiliation, particularly targeting youth along border areas.

“They have changed their approach. Instead of direct confrontation, they are trying to enter the region disguised as members of clans, organizing youth under tribal identities, especially in the border regions,” the statement read.

This warning comes after AS fighters launched an attack on parts of the Somali Regional State in September 2023. In response, security measures in the region were significantly heightened, including stringent inspections of vehicles crossing into the territory.

The Somali Regional State government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining security and urged residents to cooperate with local authorities to counter any threats.
